The use of cell phones by children in South Africa has increased and that leads to rise in production and consumption of child pornography. It has become a serious issue and needs immediate attention to control this fast spreading disease.

He said “They take videos and pictures performing sexual acts and these videos get distributed around via cell phone.”. Parents and teachers should teach them to use mobile phone for own benefit rather than calling a big trouble for their life by doing such bad activities.

It is mandated by the FPB and as per Films and Publications Act 65 of 1996, it is unlawful to make, circulate or possess child pornography. To report child pornographic material discovered on the internet, the FPB runs a website called fpbprochild.org.za for the public. So if you find anything that is related to child porn then report through this site to FPB. Makola said once a query is reported to FPB, it immediately refers the matter to the police for further investigation and action.

The hotline is also a part of the FPB’s campaign that works against child pornography. It aims at creating awareness among different South African communities, particularly of children. This campaign makes aware about risks for creation, circulation and viewing of pornographic material on the internet, as well as on cell phones. Makola added “The campaign also aims to empower children to be responsible in their conduct and to be vigilant when using social networking sites or interacting with strangers”. Parents need to know what their child is doing with his/ her phone. Children must be aware about the risk if they will be involved in such activity.
